This multi-functional hive component gets installed between the bottom board and the first brood camber.
Its functions include:
- Creates space beneath the bottom box keeping the brood nest further from the drafty entrance making it easier for the bees to keep the brood warm and regulate temperatures in the hive.
- The solid board at the front of the rack also reduces draft on the brood nest. It also reduces light, which makes it more likely the queen will lay eggs lower on the comb in the bottom box.
- The added space it creates reduces overheating of crowded hives and also reduces the tendency of swarming.
